Review

"Laura Jane Grace shows great bravery diving into every detail of a story seldom told, with the advantage of having kept journals documenting everything she went through, from childhood to the beginnings of her band. Capturing the pain and struggle, self-doubt and lack of support she experienced, Grace provides a valuable starting point for a conversation to broaden the understanding of, and empathy for, trans people."―Joan Jett, Billboard's 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time"An ambassador for the gender revolution currently sweeping through public restroom policy and National Geographic covers [and] a potent tool for empathy that hasn't quite existed in pop culture....Grace and co-writer Dan Ozzi spin green room drama and rock star recklessness into a gem of a rock bio that belongs on a shelf alongside Hammer of the Gods and Get in the Van."―Paste Magazine, Best Nonfiction Books of 2016"A full-length tell-all about Grace's lifelong journey to discovering, accepting, and at last publicly acknowledging her true identity....[told] with daring candor...the memoir establishes her as at once a transgender icon and a modern day heroine."―Harper's Bazaar, Best Books of November"A savagely candid transgender memoir, and thus far, the only quintessential text regarding Against Me!--one of the most significant punk bands of the aughts and onward. Without a smidgen of sarcasm, I would highly recommend the book to your grandmother, even if she is afraid of transpeople and can't name three Clash songs."―Esquire"In this riveting and at times harrowing biography, Grace recounts in unflinching detail her path to self-realization....The story [of the band] would be enough for a compelling book, but Grace's gender dysphoria adds a remarkable twist to the tale....[a] brutally honest, soul-searching memoir."―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"An engrossing story about the perils of the rock star lifestyle, identity, drug abuse, and what it means to be a punk."―Third Coast Review, Best Music and Art of 2016"The extraordinary story of the misfit among the punks who attempted to save himself by choosing his gender--as if by erasing the man he was might heal the diseased society that produced him. Laura Jane Grace claws her way into the light and we are all inspired to find our own grace."―John Cameron Mitchell"Laura Jane Grace has pulled off the near impossible. With her first book, Tranny, she has added a new perspective to a vastly over populated genre of music-based literature. In doing so, she has also managed to tell her own deeply personal, at times heartbreaking, story of her struggle with gender identity in a society still content to ascribe gender using an archaic binary system that drives so many transgender people to despair. This book is a mandatory read for anyone interested in gender identity, intellectual punk rock, or an engrossing account of a great rock and roll band, subjects that may sound mutually exclusive but here are inextricably linked."―Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage"Grace writes about juggling the pressures of grappling with dysphoria and keeping her band together with such naked honesty that you can feel the weight being lifted off of her shoulders....A page turner that brims with hard emotional truth....A poignant and timely look at a still-emerging cultural issue worthy of serious discussion."―A.V. Club"Potent...Grace writes viscerally about her experiences grappling with this condition throughout her life."―Rolling Stone

I'm not a fan of Against Me! but read this book for the gender transition story and great writing, on the recommendation of fans of the band. It's a page-turner and I read straight through it.The story was gleaned from journals kept by Laura Jane through the years so the narrative felt like it was in real time, with a wealth of detail, celebrity name-dropping, and details about living life on road. If you have transgender friends or family members, this book can help you and others understand the conflicts and pain that can occur from gender dysphoria, and if you are a fan of the band, it's even better!

I thought this was really interesting insight into a transgender person as a human, being rather than just "LGBT". Both are important, but I think it's important to remember that we are all human and every human, regardless of religion, race, gender, or their place on any spectrum - is a valid and important part of the culture.Laura Jane gave me insight into how she feel now, and also how she felt when she was younger and her name was Tom.Congratulations Laura Jane Grace, for giving the rest of the world some insight into your unique life experience. It takes an extra ordinary amount of courage to open yourself up to the scrutiny of the big wide world ( which can be very judgmental and unforgiving at times.) May the Universe continue to bless you as you live your truth.

I'm an AM! fan and was very excited to read this book. I enjoyed it, but my big complaint is that it seems stretched too thin. There are moments when Laura discusses the band and moments when she discusses her dysphoria, but Inever felt like I got a real taste of either. The book just moves too quickly. That being said, I would recommend this book if you are interested in the band. There are some fun facts and a few Easter eggs that keep the book fun.

Since I was young I've loved biographies. Started with sports stars. By middle school my love of music trumped my love of sports so I started reading rock biopics. Though I'm a huge fan of Against Me!, I actually ordered this to learn more about gender dysphoria as a friends child recently came out. Was pleased by the fact that it was a rock bio that dove into her dysphoria as well. Litterally read it in a day. Already passed it along to another Against Me! fan. Good read. Good writing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It talks about both Laura Jane Grace's struggles with gender identity, as well as the struggles of life in a band. I find that it was very well written. Being both a rock musician and someone who is gender non conforming myself, I was able to relate to many aspects of the book. This is a great book for anyone in the punk rock scene to read. It can also give another perspective on accepting your gender identity and not feeling like it is something you have to know from when you were a child.

Been a fan of against me for a while, I was surprised when Laura announced she was transitioning. And even more surprised when i heard she was writing a memoir. It's a page turner the book mostly focuses on her band, her record deals and of course how gender dysphoria is constantly in the background. Laura is an inspiration, but she's not positioning herself to be a role model. Her story is simply one of many in the LGBTQ world. Self deprecation, stories of drug use, friendships and romance found the stories are raw, honest and can be a punch in the gut. I should give a disclaimer that I am still reading this but it has kept my attention and i believe it deserves it.

Loved this book. It was great to read about her experience both personally and as a lead for Against Me! I am even more of a fan now after reading this book, but I really appreciated how open and honest this book way. It was also interesting to hear about the life of the band before social media. It's a real page turner, I couldn't put it down. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope we can read in the future how it continues.

The book allows the reader to experience the first hand life of a touring punk band. Even if the names of clubs or cities are not familiar, the quest for happiness is.Throughout the book Miss Grace intertwines her dysphoria and her self destructive behaviors. A powerful read! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the intensity of the beginning of her transition was not as in-depth as the other aspects of the book.I recommend the book highly to anyone searching for themselves.
