I read this book through three lenses: First and foremost, as someone who grew up in Lancaster, Ohio, and whose immediate family (siblings, nieces/nephews, parents) still live there. I visit at least three times per year. Second, I have concerns about the growing wage gap and looked for a book that, without being condescending or demeaning, showed why and how a man like Trump was elected President. Third and most personally, three immediate family members are represented in the book and I wanted to see what the author had to say about them. (He was very, and perhaps unfairly, unkind in one case.)My review: There was a great deal of financial and policy content that will lose many people – I had difficulty following along, and I’m somewhat familiar with the private equity model. Additionally, he surmises that “conservatives” are the problem, which is a generalization that will turn off anyone who believes differently. (I’m of the mindset that neither side has the best interest of people in mind, though Trump is uniquely dangerous for many reasons.) All of that said, there is a compelling case that runaway capitalism has not been good for our country. A position on which we are aligned – capitalism that does not work for the people, only for the wealthy needs to be reconsidered and given checks and balances.The most disappointing aspect of the book was the often-one-sided view from the perspective of drug abusers. There is a rampant drug problem in Lancaster, Ohio, and the author is right to acknowledge and talk about it. However, he missed any stories of the remaining middle class residents who are raising their children here. As someone noted, the story eventually felt like it should be titled, “Mark and his friends.”Overall it was interesting to read and I walked away with some new knowledge. There are stories I would like to see told about my home town and its people, so that readers with no experience in Lancaster will still see its richer fabric of stories; but even without this I would recommend the book.

This is a book that needed to be written. I lived this book in another state and in a different industry. You can't deny the facts. And the facts are that deregulation of the financial industry led to the destruction of America's industrial base for profit. For the destruction of communities and lives; what did the hedge fund and predatory capitalists get in return? Money. Short term profits..The America we live in today is the unintended consequences of what was perpetrated on us by greed over the last three decades. And we are poorer in every way.Thank you Mr. Alexander for your reporting and this excellent telling of what happened to so many hard working Americans across this country.

Amazing author and story. I'm a Business Econ graduate and felt I always believed in free trade etc. This story carefully lays out the disgusting evils of private equity and corporate raiders and their effect on average American communities. You will understand the why of the deindustrialization of America after reading this book.Mr. Topper I don't think it was a fair fight when Icahn and his lawyers rode into town. I don't lay much of the blame for any of this at your father's feet. No one in the town could have gone toe to toe and come out the other side in any better shape.

Many people have already reviewed this book, causing me to hesitate to add another. I will only point out a couple of disagreements I have with the other critics. Some of them are actually from the depressed community in which the book is set, and some of those were even approached by and/or spoke to the author. I lack the authority to question their judgments. My criticism is that the book cannot make up its mind whether it is an oral history or an indictment of the predatory capitalism of the Reagan era and beyond. Many reviewers disdained the economic analysis, but I found myself wanting more of that and less about the local citizens, or at least some of them, whose stories were not as compelling as the space devoted to them might suggest. Still, their voices are necessary and contribute something to understanding how things got as bad as the author perceives them to be. This is Trump country and, I predict, hoodwinked again by hedge fund managers and the like. "Sad," as the current occupant of the White House likes to say.

About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

 

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John and Leslie).

 

John A. Suchocki

 

John is the author of Conceptual Chemistry as well as a co-author (with Paul and Leslie Hewitt) of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations. John obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He taught chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and then at the Leeward Community College. In addition to authoring textbooks, John is currently an adjunct faculty member at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. He also produces science education multimedia through his company, Conceptual Productions (www.CPro.cc) and writes and illustrates science-oriented children’s books.

 

Leslie A. Hewitt

 

Leslie is also coauthor of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with Paul and John). After obtaining her geology degree at San Francisco State University, Leslie’s interest in teaching broadened to include educating elementary and middle school students. She completed additional graduate work in geography and education, receiving her California State Teaching Certification, also from San Francisco State University. In addition to writing, she devotes considerable time and energy to bringing science education to young people in engaging ways. She is particularly active in her local school district where she works on curriculum development and hands-on science, organizes interactive science fairs, guest teaches, and works with students on connections between scientific concepts and life in the every day world.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late sixties, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduating from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller, and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon.

Today Mr. Casey and his wife, Olga, often cruise aboard their own Old Boat--a 22-year-old, much-modified Allied Seawind. They've done all the work themselves, with no adult supervision.

Half of what this book does is explain a role that I've fallen into doing for the design teams at the last two organizations I've worked with--managing internal stakeholders and designers to help ensure design is impactful. Honestly, the title is a bit of a misnomer as it's not just about articulating the design decisions but also about managing your career as a designer in a way that ensures you and your work are respected.Please, please read this book.

Articulating Design Decisions is a must have book for anyone in the creative field, I'd even argue that people who are solely developers, and rarely touch designs should read it too. Tom has done an excellent job in tackling the issues that we all face when explaining our choices to our clients and the rest of the team.One of the chapters that really hit home for me is early on in the book and talks about really understanding that your clients are humans and that their focus is not always 100% on the project at hand because they have so much else going on in their lives. It truly helps you build empathy and a greater understanding of why some clients might come off as rude, disinterested, or hard to deal with. For me it really made me reflect on past experiences and consider why the interactions we had happened in such a way.The greatest strength of the book is that there are numerous real life examples, from Tom's on life, that really go into outstanding detail. His ability to recollect that information to such a degree really shows him to be an expert at building his arguments for his decisions. This also makes reading the book that much easier because it creates a very tangible explanation of the concepts that are discussed.This book could even be considered as a translation of client talk that helps us understand how to decipher the feedback we are given. Clients may not understand design, but they can still understand when something is wrong or not communicated correctly. Tom goes into great detail helping the reader understand what it is that the client is asking for, or at least how to ask the right questions to get there.There are several pages dedicated to handling alternative designs, accounting for why we made our decisions, and how to be prepared for the inevitable barrage of questions. This is an invaluable section as I feel like I see few people taking on the extra work that Tom puts in but the end result of it is that it actually saves you time, to put it short, it is very brilliant.If you are a designer, developer, project manager, artist, or anyone who touches design at all, you need to pick this book up because it will only help you become better at your trade. I really do feel like this is going to be one of those classic books that becomes required reading for everyone.

This is one of those books you WISH you had when you started out. I spent a lot of un-fruitful time becoming annoyed with clients who opposed my design choices, even when I had data, personas and teams backing me up. Toms book has reminded me that Stakeholders are People Too (http://www.uxbooth.com/articles/stakeholders-are-people-too/).Tom opens the discussion up by explaining why clients, non-designers they are, have opinions about your work. This had never clicked with me before, but after realizing why stakeholders had so much to say about the position of my buttons and widgets, I could feel myself letting go of ego and pride, which gives me the clarity to uncover the actual problems the client is trying to solve.Resources that teach you HOW to design are good (and plentiful). Resources that show you how to effectively communicate with clients and get sign-off are splendid. This book show you how to do just that.
